Turmeric supplements are among the most widely used medicinal herbs. A close relative of antioxidant-rich ginger root, turmeric is harvested from the curcuma longa plant that is grown and cultivated in India and parts of South East Asia. The plant’s rhizomes are dried and ground into an aromatic powder that is used prolifically in Asian curries and pastes. Indeed, it is a significant part of India’s culinary history.

This traditional Indian root is much more than a delicious cooking spice. It is also a potent medicinal supplement with powerful healing properties. Turmeric supplements have been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine to treat a range of health conditions, namely inflammation. More than 10,000 scholarly research studies have been published citing the proven healing benefits of a turmeric supplement. In fact, turmeric pills are more effective in treating some health disorders than the pharmaceuticals manufactured explicitly for those illnesses–a testament to its fortitude.

Turmeric has a bitter, astringent, and pungent flavor. It is rich in curcuminoids (naturally occurring chemical compounds), specifically curcumin, that are responsible for its numerous health benefits and vibrant orange color.

But turmeric is a stage name for the real star in this healing root: Curcumin. A phytonutrient, curcumin is the most notable of several curcuminoids in turmeric root, containing anti-inflammatory properties comparable to pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories, but without the toxicity or side effects. In essence, a therapeutic dosage of organic turmeric curcumin supplement may act as a natural substitute for ibuprofen and other prescription-strength anti-inflammatory drugs–and it’s safer for long-term use.

Because curcumin does not absorb well into the body on its own, it needs the aid of peperine. Several studies have reported that peperine increases the bioavailability of curcumin by 2000{333419861ba30e1dc2ec13e0bc68cc1cc8c177a4fba1b407cb76f9cb1a355b06}, rendering turmeric pills that include black pepper extract much more effective than those without it. Bioperine® is the highest quality organic black pepper extract on the market, and along with other scientifically-proven turmeric absorption enhancers (trans-resveratrol, ginger root, quercetin) forms the ‘proprietary enhanced absorption complex’ in Jiva Botanical’s Organic Turmeric formula.

Although curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric, it’s not the only notable feature. It also contains protein, dietary fiber, niacin, calcium, potassium, copper, iron, magnesium, zinc, as well as vitamins C, E, and K. A daily turmeric supplement can provide as much nutritional benefit as a multivitamin or a bowl of fresh steamed veggies, and at the same time, aid in the heal of a variety of ailments.

A turmeric supplement has several benefits but it is most widely known as a natural anti-inflammatory. Inflammation plays a role in nearly every disease known to humans. It is an indication of how well our immune system is functioning. While acute, temporary inflammation is a natural and healthy part of our body’s defense system against disease, chronic low-level inflammation can have damaging effects at the cellular level and is linked to degenerative diseases like arthritis. Treating inflammation safely with a high-quality, organic turmeric supplement may help to prevent or reduce the risk of illness borne from chronically inflamed tissue and joints.Besides improving inflammation, turmeric/curcumin is also one of nature’s top antioxidants, which assist cell maintenance and regeneration in the prevention of disease.

Turmeric is also tri-doshic; its heating quality balances vata and kapha while its bitter flavor stabilizes pitta. A turmeric supplement offers a variety of benefits when combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Evidence suggests that curcumin can benefit the following conditions:

•Inflammatory conditions such as arthritis**
•Premature aging**
•Malabsorption and digestive issues**
•Depression and other cognitive and mood disorders**
•High blood pressure**
•Circulatory disorders**
•Certain cancers**
•Skin disorders**

Cautions and Contraindications

Consulting with a medical specialist or Ayurvedic doctor is advised before starting any turmeric supplement dose for pain or other medicinal or therapeutic purposes.

The safety of consuming turmeric in large quantities over time is yet to be determined. There are no official recommendations in the health community about turmeric intake, though mild side-effects have been reported from a very high dosage, include diarrhea and nausea. Some studies have shown that as much as 12,000 mg is well tolerated . Overall, tummeric is considered safe, but like any food, herb, or spice, even the best turmeric powder may produce adverse effects if overused. As with any herbal supplement, moderation is key.

Pregnant and lactating women may have a low dosage without adverse effects but they should avoid taking turmeric pills that have a higher concentration of curcumin, which is a uterine stimulant.

People experiencing a gallbladder obstruction, on blood thinners, antidepressants, medications for lowering blood sugar or reducing acid reflux should avoid taking a tumeric supplement.

Who should take turmeric / curcumin?

The use of an herbal supplement to improve health is a personal choice. However, almost anyone can benefit from taking medicinal turmeric capsules to relieve certain conditions. Always consult with a healthcare specialist to determine if a turmeric supplement is right for you, and for advice on the correct dose.

How much turmeric should I take for inflammation – What is the recommended dosage?

Follow the dosage recommended on the supplement label unless a health specialist recommends otherwise. While the powder is not effective in the treatment of health conditions, adults may generally take turmeric pills of between 400-600 milligrams, up to three times per day, for a daily dose of about 1500 milligrams as an anti-inflammatory. However, the dosage for pain and other specific conditions may differ and should be determined by a doctor to ascertain how much turmeric is safe and effective for you. Starting with a small dosage and gradually increasing it is wise.

How should I take a supplement?

While dosage depends on your health condition, there is some confusion about how to take turmeric. A supplement with standardized turmeric extract is most effective because it has a higher concentration of curcumin. The benefits of a turmeric supplement will increase when taken with black pepper extract. Use supplements that have a ratio of 1:100, black pepper extract to curcumin. Because it is a fat-soluble herb, consuming it with a fatty meal is ideal–but be sure to choose healthy fats.

What’s the difference between turmeric/curcumin?

Curcumin is the chemical compound and main active ingredient extracted from the root. On its own, the root’s health benefits are subtle–it is used primarily as a culinary spice to add flavor, color, and heat to a variety of dishes, and as a dye for textiles. It is the potent anti-oxidant curcumin that influences healing by reversing the chemicals that cause inflammation and damage cells, allowing new, repair cells to function.

What are the side effects of turmeric pills?

Regular use of a turmeric supplement has no reported serious side effects when consumed in a moderate amount as directed by an Ayurvedic doctor. A very high turmeric dosage may cause some nausea or diarrhea. Also, people on certain medications or pregnant women should avoid turmeric supplements. Always check with a health specialist to avoid taking too much turmeric.

Can I take a turmeric supplement with prescription drugs?

No evidence exists to suggest that it interferes with most medications, though combining it with certain pharmaceuticals may cause adverse effects. A turmeric supplement should not be used in conjunction with blood thinners, antidepressants, and drugs for lowering blood sugar or reducing acid reflux.

Does eating it ground or fresh have the same benefits as taking a turmeric supplement?

While culinary turmeric is beneficial to health, a supplement is considerably more effective because it contains a higher concentration of the active ingredient curcumin. The natural root powder contains only about 3% curcumin, while a good supplement should have about 95% concentration. For example, you would need to consume close to 32 grams of powder to get the same amount of curcumin found in two 500 mg turmeric pills. Always determine how much curcumin is in your supplement before you buy.

When should I take a turmeric supplement?

Fasting improves absorption so taking it about an hour before you eat or three hours after a meal will increase its bioavailability. However, you may wish to take it with a small drink, such as fresh juice or herbal tea. A milk decoction is most affective, as absorption is aided by the fat content in the milk. Morning is the best time as an evening dosage may cause sleep disturbances. It’s advisable to establish a routine with daily doses of turmeric tablets or capsules to determine what time of day is best for you.

Where can I buy turmeric supplements?

Supplements are much easier to obtain than discovering where to buy turmeric fresh–the herbal supplement marketplace is packed with variations of curcumin and turmeric for sale. Available both in health and wellness shops and online, turmeric supplements are available in capsule and tablet form. When searching for turmeric where to buy it is less important than ensuring what comprises it. At the very least, choose a supplement that contains black pepper extract (bioperine®) for increased absorption, has a 95% concentration of curcumin, and is made with pure, organic ingredients. Jiva Botanicals has an excellent, high-grade supplement available in our online shop .”
